Catching Up…
May 15th, 2007 by Mike Smart
It’s been nine days since the award banquet, and I’ve been jotting down notes every day about the events that have happened since receiving the Minnesota Teacher of the Year award. My first goal with this blog is to fill out these notes and get them posted. I’m hoping to be able to accomplish this in the next week or so, but I’m also still working through a backlog of email, phone messages, and regular mail relating to being named Teacher of the Year. If you have contacted me in the past week and haven’t heard back yet, I’m not ignoring you. I’ll be in touch soon.
I’m hoping to make posts on the following topics:
- Selection Weekend
- Media Day
- No, I Don’t Speak Chinese
- Minnesota House of Representatives Proclamation
Educationally, I’d like to put down some thoughts on the following:
- Elements of Governor Pawlenty’s plan
- Class Size
Also on the list of things to do is to go through the Minnesota Public Radio Midday Show, when I appeared with Gary Eichten, and clarify and expand on some of my answers. There are a dozen or so places where I felt like I didn’t do the questions justice, and I’d like to go back and further explain my thoughts.
With regards to the structure of the blog, I realize the charities information isn’t up yet. I have a number of ideas on charities I’d like to list here, and will be finalizing things in the next couple of days.

Mike,
Congratulations on setting this up so fast! What a great idea to extend the forum you’ve been afforded by Teacher of the Year recognition. I look forward to your sparking debates, clarifying your point of view, and just taking us all along for the ride! Here’s to a great year!

Mike, I have a feeling from your first few posts that this is going to be absolutely great. I’m looking forward to reading more. Welcome to the blogosphere!
Jane: Thanks for the encouragement! One of the nice things about a blog is that it can be set up quickly and cheaply. The tricky part, I think, will be to be consistent in posting. I’m looking forward to it, though, and hope that you enjoy it.
Scott: Thank you as well. I snuck a quick look at your blog, Dangerously Irrelevant, (http://www.dangerouslyirrelevant.org/), and am quite impressed. I’ve made a note to spend some time this weekend reading through it. I’m especially interested in reading more of your thoughts on technology in schools, which is a topic I’m big on.

On my blog, some points of interest for you may include the Quotes category (on the left), my Top Posts from last year (on the right), and, of course, whatever else strikes your fancy! Thanks!
Scott: Thanks for the encouraging post on your blog, and I’ll start with those sections of your blog that you’ve indicated.
